Facial Expressions
Ol' Don has often seen
carvings, both caricature and realistic, where the face shows little or no
expression even though the body pose indicates a certain mood. Add
emphasis to your carving by giving them more attitude and expression. Here
are some examples.

The face is a flexible
mass capable of squashing and stretching and fundamental things happen to the
face for every emotion. It doesn't matter if the person is large or small,
short or tall.

Facial expressions are created
primarily by the movement of the mouth and eyebrows.

Notice in these
examples the position and angles of the mouth and eyebrows plus the shape of the
eyes and the mouth. These are the elements which give each expression it's
definition.

For a detailed
explanation of each expression see my feature in issue #7 of "Carving Magazine".
